Enfields in Queue: Malaya

The Federated Malay States was the designation of British Malaya prior to 1946 when the Federation of Malaya was formed.

Lee-Enfield rifle unit markings - Malaya

Rifle 169
SMLE No.1 Mk III*. BSA 1918. Wood (surprisingly) VG. Matched serial number (bolt, receiver, barrel, backsight, forestock and nosecap.) Not import marked. Marked on disk “FMSP” – Federated Malay States Police.

A really good hard core colonial police unit similar to the Royal Burma Police described by George Orwell in his autobiographical novel “Burmese Days”. I’m only just beginning to get into exploring the Malayan history.

Lee-Enfield rifle unit markings - Malaya

Rifle 173
SMLE Rifle No.1 Mk III* BSA 1916. Marked on disk “PWVR” – Province Wellesley Volunteer Rifles. Overall 85% finish. Wood VG. Matched serial number (bolt, receiver, barrel, backsight, forestock and nosecap.) Not import marked.

The PWVR was formed in 1915 from the Penang and Province Wellesley Volunteer Rifles which was a “planters rifles” volunteer regiment from the Penang area in Malaya. The PWVR was disbanded in 1921 which coincides with the date on this rifle.
