Page Notes & Sources

[1] English press photographer Herbert Baldwin (1880-1920) had already distinguished himself as a war photographer covering the First Balkan War (1912-1913) and published “A War Photographer in Thrace” (1913) when he was appointed to record the movements and actions of Australian soldiers on the Western Front in 1916 and 1917. Baldwin captured more than 540 images on glass plates, some quite stunning for both clarity and composition.
